Ciné Lumière

Those who still think that the French Institute’s Ciné Lumière devotes itself entirely to French cinema ought finally to be disabused by its present season, The Best of 2013 (until January 31), during which only three home-grown films are on show and five come from other countries.

The Great Beauty

My own favourite film of the year, Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty, an extraordinarily beautiful and imaginative summation of Rome and Romans today seen through the eyes of a once famous writer (Toni Servillo, a Sorrentino regular), shows tonight.
